David Pelzer, author of "A Boy Called It" will speak at the Civic Auditorium on Thursday evening at 7:00 p.m. He is a living testament of a self-made man, who as an optimist strongly exudes resilience, service to mankind, personal responsibility and faith in humanity. Pelzer’s unique and intriguing outlook on life, coupled with his "Robin Williams" like wit and sense of humor entertain and encourage all of us to truly commit to overcome any challenge, while living life to its fullest. For over two decades, Pelzer has dedicated his life to helping others...to help themselves. While many make excuses and seem pessimistic, Pelzer carries the banner in a nation where opportunities are endless in what he calls "The Greatness of America." And through his work, you will too.
Unifying teaching and learning through creativity, collegiality, community interests as well as individual, and just a bit of what he calls "craziness", defines 2009 National Teacher of the Year Michael Geisen’s approach to working with, in his words, "my fellow human beings…my students."
Geisen, a science teacher at Crook County Middle School in Prineville, Oregon, is the 58th National Teacher of the Year. He will begin a year as a full-time national and international spokesperson for education on June 1, 2008.
"A great teacher," he says, "is a unifier of ideas, a unifier of people, and a unifier of ideas with people. In my teaching I strive to bring together creativity and science, to unite my students into a community, and to help each person in this community connect with the big ideas of science." Geisen with speak Thursday afternoon.
